NEW DELHI : Former Indian football captain, Bhaichung Bhutia remains optimistic about the country’s chances in upcoming matches despite some critical absences.
Bhaichung Bhutia has generated excitement regarding the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2023-24 by proposing that in their group match, India may emerge as a strong competitor against Australia. Despite being regarded as favourites, Bhutia is of the opinion that with its firepower and strength, India could astound world No. 25 Socceroos.
India has a challenging task ahead, he expressed confidence in the country's progress. He emphasized that despite being grouped with title contenders including Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria - defeating Australia for the Indian side is not an impossible feat.
Noteworthy, Bhutia pointed out the possible hindrance brought about by injured key players namely Ashique Kuruniyan, Jeakson Singh and Anwar Ali. In particular, he emphasized that India will miss Kuruniyan's significant contribution to their team due to his exceptional power, adaptability, quickness and proficiency in playing on the field.
Bhutia, when asked about India's chances of making it to the Round of 16, urged caution and stressed on first concentrating on overcoming Australia as a crucial step before considering any other possibilities.
Recognizing the excessive dependence on captain Sunil Chhetri for scoring goals, Bhutia commended him as India's most reliable option in terms of goal-scoring. Despite Chhetri being advanced in years, Bhutia remained optimistic about discovering more players who could have a comparable influence.
Bhutia praised head coach Igor Stimac for ensuring a well-prepared team and acknowledged his coaching abilities. He also recognized the positive impact of Stimac's leadership on the players' morale, which has translated into commendable performances by India in recent tournaments.
Bhutia, who is part of the sports ministry's Mission Olympic Cell, has a positive outlook for India beyond the AFC Asian Cup. He believes that India can perform well in the upcoming Paris Games due to strong government support and commitment towards improving their performance in Olympics. Bhutia also expects better results than before by building on their recent success achieved at Hangzhou Asian games.
To sum up, the management maintains a positive outlook regarding India's triumph in various areas such as the AFC Asian Cup and the forthcoming Paris Games.
