GUWAHATI: The 38th Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated in the city with various functions. September 3 is the birth day of Bhogeswar Baruah, the first arjuna award recipient from Assam. The day is celebrated as Abhiruchi Sports Day by Abhiruchi groups every year.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic the organizers decided to keep the event very brief this year. A cycle rally was held from Chandmari fly over to Nehru Stadium this morning which was flagged off by the Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Borah. The function was also attended by 'Arjun' Bhogeswar Barua, 'Arjun' Jayanta Talukdar, Chief General Manager of State Bank of India, NE Circle RS Ramesh and Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Department Pabitraram Khound.
Later a function was held in a city hotel with a small gathering. The meeting was attended by Bhogeswar Barua along with several sports enthusiasts, former officials of sports department, sports organizers and former sportspersons including Premadhar Sarma, Kamala Kalita, Swapnanil Barua, Subhash Basumatari, Kailash Sarma, Rajiv Prakash Barua, Pradip Hazarika, Shyam Rajkhowa and two officials from NRL and SBI Madhuchanda Adhikari and Dwijen Bora respectively along with the president of the organizing committee Balendra Mohan Chakraborty. Most of the speaker in the function appealed to the Government to provide helps to the different sports organizations who are sincerely working to promote sports in the State.
