40th Abhiruchi Sports Day celebration to kick off on Sunday

GUWAHATI: The 40th Abhiruchi Sports Day will kick off on Sunday in various parts of the State. The central function will be held in Guwahati and former world champion boxer L Sarita Devi will attend the programme as the guest of honour.

It may be mentioned here that 3rd September is the birth day of Assam’s first Arjuna Award recipient Bhogeswar Barua and Abhiruchi Groups celebrate it as the Sports Day.

Addressing a media gathering the president of the organizing committee Balendra Mohan Chakravarty said, this time the celebration would be held for two days. The first day will witness mass jogging along with Inter Education and Institute PT and Group Dance competition. On Monday the event will start with a sports quiz competition and it will be followed by a felicitation programme in the evening. Both the events would be held at the TR Phookan Indoor Stadium.

Chakravarty today also announced that this year the RG Baruah Award for Eminent Sports Organizer will confer to Devajit Saikia, the joint secretary of the BCCI. There will be four more awards which will be handed over at Monday’s function. These are: Chidananda Das Award (Gymnastics coach Ghanajyoti Das, Chandra Nath Chakravarty Physical Education Excellence Award (Dipak Das), Jogesh Sarma Krira Udyogi Award (Aftab Hussain) and Gopal Barua Promising Player Award (Nirvesh Saikia, Table Tennis and Dhritima Uzir, Athletics). There is also a special award which will be jointly received by Jyotsna Kalita and Ramesh Chandra Bora respectively.

Meanwhile 56 players from Assam, who represented India during the last year, would be felicitated in the same function on Monday. The media briefing was also attended by Sukumar Medhi, secretary of the organizing committee.
