GUWAHATI: The 40th edition of the Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated across the state on Sunday. The main function was held in Guwahati and former world champion boxer L Sarita Devi attended it as a special guest.

The day’s function was kicked off as usual with the mass jogging from Chandmari flyover. Nearly 1000 participants from various schools and institutions took part in the early morning jogging which was flagged off by L Sarita Devi.

Addressing the gathering Sarita Devi said, “It is really nice to see that you are honouring a living legend. It will inspire the new generation to come into the sport.”

In her speech Sarita Devi also appealed to all quarters to make the NorthEast region drug free by taking children to the sports. “I feel Sports is the best way to keep the children away from the bad effects of drugs. I request all of you to encourage the new generation to come into the sport,” said the boxer.

Later talking to The Sentinel L Sarita Devi, former world champion, said that in the recent past athletes from Assam are really doing well in the international circuit. “Lovlina, Hima, Shiva, Ankushita, Amlan... list is getting bigger and bigger. Your government is also doing a good job by creating new infrastructure. I am sure the result will be much better in the coming days.” said the Arjuna Awardee boxer.

She also admitted that athletes of Manipur suffered badly due to recent violence. Sarita said, “All the activities including sports came to a halt in our State. However we are a great sporting state and are producing athletes for international level on a regular basis. This year nearly 44 athletes from Manipur will represent India in the forthcoming Asian Games. So I feel we shall overcome all odds and will continue our good work in the sports arena.”

Later the boxer also participated in the Dance and PT Competition that was held at the T R Phookan Indoor Stadium.

Mass Jogging(Clubs): 1st- Gymnastic Coaching Centre, 2nd- Guwahati Kho kho Coaching Centre,3rd- State Sports Academy.

Dance: 1st-Maharshi Vidya Mandir , 2nd- Sudershon Public Academy, 3rd- Blue Bell School, 4th- Maharshi Vidya Mandir.

PT competition: 1st: Sudarshan Public School, 2nd- Blue Bell School, 3rd. Rising Star English School.
