GUWAHATI:
The return of athlete to the stadium will be deferred further as Guwahati will
witness another round of lockdown from Monday. Although the Government is
trying its best to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the state but the situation
is slowly going out of control in Guwahati and it forced the Government to
implement another round of lockdown, this time for 14-day, from Monday.
The sports fraternity today welcomed the decision and said it was necessary to take such a step. According to them the decision may defer the return of athletes into the stadium further but still it is the right step and everyone should follow it.
The secretary of the All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) Ankush Dutta said, "Our players already returned into the court and doing regular practice session following all the guidelines circulated by the Government earlier. But as we have now to follow another round of lockdown so we have decided to stop all the activities from Monday and no activities would be held till further notice."
Supporting the decision of lockdown the secretary of the Gauhati Sports Association Dhrubajyoti Kalita said,"We have not started any activities this season till date. But regular discussions were going on among our officials on how and when we can start it. But the situation of the city is very grim and Government took right step by enforcing lockdown from Monday."
The secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association Hemanta Kalita also felt that it was a good step. Talking to The Sentinel he said, "The decision to impose lockdown once again in the city would definitely delay the return of athlete into the stadium but still I support it. There is no other alternative because health should get first priority. My advice to the players is to work on their fitness at home and don't go out."
