GUWAHATI: The 10th anniversary of the first successful summit on Everest by an Assamese climber will be celebrated with a day-long programme on May 18. Assam Rock and Sports Climbing Association (ARSCA) has been celebrating the day as the ‘Axom Everest Day’ every year to mark the historic occasion.

The day-long programme will start with a mass jogging from Dighalipukhuri in the morning. Padmashree and five-time Everester Anshu Jamsenpa and former international swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika will join the mass jogging programme. Later in the afternoon the Everesters will attend a function where they will share their journey to scale the Everest. The function will also be attended by the veteran mountaineers and sportspersons of the State which will be held at the Gauhati Town Club Auditorium.

It was May 18, 2013 when Tarun Saikia became the first Assamese to scale Mount Everest. He climbed the World’s highest peak as a part of 1st North East India Mount Everest Expedition. Tarun was followed by another Assamese mountaineer Manish Deka who also scaled the peak in the same year.
