GUWAHATI: Following the footsteps of Boxing Federation of India, Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) too decided to monitor the fitness of the State’s elite boxers who are now at their home due to lockdown enforced because of COVID-19. The association is in touch with the boxers and also the different district secretaries so that boxers undergo basic fitness drill during their staying at home.

Talking to The Sentinel the secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association Hemanta Kalita today admitted that due to COVID-19 although there is no competition and the boxers will get enough time to recover once normalcy return. But still, little fitness drill is essential for the boxers at home as it will help them to get back their rhythm quickly.

It may be mentioned here that the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) became the first national sports federation in the country to reach out to its players through video conferencing to guide and motivate them during the 21-day lockdown. BFI President Ajay Singh spoke at length today and checked on the health, training regimen, nutrition and mental well being of all boxers.

Commenting on the BFI’s step Kalita said: “It’s a very positive move which would help our elite boxers to stay in good shape, both physically and mentally, during their stay at home. We too are trying to follow the similar steps. It is essential.”

Meanwhile Kalita informed that although Guwahati is selected as a host for the next edition of the National Youth Boxing Championship but the tournament is postponed for an indefinite period and the fresh date would be announced later. The championship was supposed to be held from May 18.
