GUWAHATI: New sensation in Indian swimming Shivangi Sarma started her campaign in 3rd Khelo India Games in style and picked up two gold medals at the Zakir Hussain Aquatics complex here today. Shivangi bagged both the medals in the U-21 women 200mts Free Style and 800mts Free style.
Assam altogether collected seven medals on Day VIII of the Games. Among the seven medals four (2 gold and 2 Bronze) came in the swimming and three in Weightlifting (one gold and 2 silver). With these seven medals Assam took their medal tally to 32 (9-10-13) and are placed in 10th place.
Shivangi, came out with spectacular performance at SAF Games in Kathmandu recently, continued her good show here also. She today first took part in the 200mts Free Style and bagged gold with 2.07.91 timing. Later she came back in the final event of the day and bagged second gold at the 800mts Free Style with the timing of 9.31.22. Rajasree Buragohain (1.30.20) gave one bronze medal to Assam in U-21 Women 100mts Breast Stroke and her teammate Anubhuti Baruah (31.11) collected the second bronze in the 50mts Butter fly event.
Meanwhile State weightlifter gave three more medals on Friday. The best performance had come from Sidhanta Gogoi who won a gold medal in the 55 kg weight category in boys U-21 event Earlier Prabal Pratim Gogoi in the 55 kg of Boys U-17 category and Gitashree Sonowal in the U-21 girls 49 kg category won one silver each.
Assam made good progress in the U-21 girls soccer also. The side today entered into the semi final of the meet defeating Delhi by 4-1. Monjita Sonowal and Sonia Marak scored two goals each for Assam while Shalini Rai reduced one for Delhi.
Host continued their good show in the Lawn Bowl events too. The game already gave four medals to Assam and four more medals were ensured today in the Girls Singles, Boys Pairs, Boys Tripple and Girls four.
