GUWAHATI: Assam collected eight medals on the penultimate day of the 37th National Games in Goa today. Among the eight medals four are gold and others four are silver.

With these medals Assam altogether collected 56 (14-20-22) medals from this edition of the meet and it is their best performance in the National Games since 2007.

Lawn bowls once again took Assam’s medal tally by storm bagging as many as five gold and a bronze in competition. Barring men and women’s singles and men’s pairs, Assam bagged the gold in all the other events of the championship.

The Assam men bagged the gold in triples and fours, while the women emerged champions in pairs, triples and fours. Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medallist Arjuna awardee Nayan Moni Saikia missed the gold in women’s singles and had to contend with a bronze, but came back strongly in tandem with Bangita Hazarika to win the women’s pairs gold. With the gold, Nayan Moni Saikia has become the first player from Assam to have won gold medals in every edition of the National Games since 2011.

The troika of Tania Choudhury, Ananya Saikia and Zeena Baruah bagged the women’s triples gold on Wednesday. Earlier, the quartet of Tania Choudhury, Ananya Saikia, Bangita Hazarika and Adinita Kakati bagged the women’s fours gold on Saturday.

The men’s triples team that won the gold comprised Asian gold medallist Putul Sonowal, who missed the men’s singles medals round by a whisker, Biswajeet Khound and Dipankar Sarma. The quartet of Mridul Bora, Dipankar Sarma, Bitupan Rabha and Amal Teron bagged the men’s fours gold.

Meanwhile Ankushita Boro collected a gold medal in women boxing defeating Kamalpreet Kaur of Punjab 5-0.

In the Kalaripayattu Assam won three silver medals through Ruma Kaita (60kg), Sima Goala (78kg), Sarfaraj Ali-Imran Ali (Doubles). On the other hand Arabinda Neog, Partha Pratim Saikia and Pronita Chutia gave Assam a silver medal today in the Mixed (Artistic) event in the newly introduced AERO Sqay, a kind of martial arts.
