Batsmen fail as Assam manage 162 runs in Ranji trophy tie against Jharkhand

GUWAHATI: There is another batting collapse for Assam as the entire team was bowled out for just 162 runs in their first innings in Ranji trophy tie against Jharkhand in Ranchi today. But the experts felt, the match was not over for Assam and visitors had a good chance to make comeback into the game. The reason behind their assessment was the pitch which is being used for the match at Ranchi.

The first day shows a lot of turns and it was so helpful for the spinners that Jharkhand even opened their innings with spinners. At the end of the day, the decision looked perfect as the home team’s spinners collected seven wickets on the first day of the game.

There was enough indication that the pitch would assist spinners and Assam was forced to change their last match playing XI. Ranjit Mali dropped from the squad and he was replaced by spinner Siddharth Sarma who made debut in first-class cricket.

Assam won the toss this morning and decided to bat first but opener Pallav Kumar Das and Rishav Das didn’t justify the captain’s decision as both of them returned quickly. Pallav failed to open his account and the contribution of Rishav was 7. Captain Sibsankar Roy and Gokul Sarma tried to stitch the damage and the duo on the third wicket added 32 runs before Sibsankar (27, 4X5) lost his wicket on team’s total 49. Promising batsman Riyan joined Gokul thereafter and the duo looked very well in the middle. The fourth-wicket partnership between them produced 54 runs but once Gokul departed Assam lost wicket on a regular interval and the chance to put a big total on the board also faded away quickly.

However, Riyan was exceptional. He played another responsible knock and scored 55, his second half-century in the season, with the help of four boundaries and two sixes. Sarupam Purkayastha(15) and Kunal Saikia (23) although made good start but failed to extend their innings. Assam lost the last five wickets for just three runs.

Among the bowlers of Jharkhand spinner Anukul Roy, bowled just 10.5 overs in the innings, picked up 4-28. Another spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and pacer Asish Kumar bagged three wickets each.
