GUWAHATI: A terrific knock against Mizoram during the ongoing Vijay Hazare Cricket tournament put him into the record book. Sarupam Purkayastha’s 163(no) is the highest by a batsman from Assam in this competition. In a conversation with The Sentinel from Dehradun on Saturday Sarupam admits that it is one of the best knock in his career. He also highlighted about the preparation of the team for the new season. Here is the excerpt.

The Sentinel (TS): Good start of the season...

Sarupam Purkayastha (SP): Yes. I agree. This innings will increase my level of confidence and will help me to contribute more runs with the bat in the coming matches.

(TS): Is it the best innings of your career?

(SP): No doubt it is one of them. This is my second century in the 50-over tie and yes I have enjoyed the innings very much.

(TS): Is promotion in top order reflex in your innings?

(SP):Hmm… yes. As I am now opening the innings, I am getting plenty of time to set and can play a big innings. A huge responsibility was entrusted to me and I will try my best to deliver big knocks.

(TS): How was the preparation of the team this season?

(SP): Preparation is very good and it is in all aspect. We have got plenty of match practice this season. I feel it has made the major difference between the preparation of this year and the earlier years.

(TS):Your comment on the style of work of new coach Ajay Ratra.

(SP): Our coach is handling the team nicely. He is an experience coach and is very supportive. He believes in good team work and also guides the team with his experience very nicely when there is any crisis.

(TS): What we can expect from Assam in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy?

(SP): We have started the competition with only one aim and it is to win matches as much as possible. The weather at Dehradun is not so good. Dark cloud and rain following us and it also made the wicket little damp. But still we are looking for victory in every match and I feel we are capable to do it as there is good balance in our batting and bowling.
