GUWAHATI: Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club (ASEBSC) and Gauhati Town club shared points in the opening game of the 66th Bordoloi Trophy Football championship at the Nehru stadium here today. Both the teams scored their lone goal of the match in the second half. Super Division league champion ASEBSC went ahead in the game in 73rd minutes through Vishal Sooner. Arman Singh returned the goal in the 88th minutes.
Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. In a brief speech Chief Minister said that Assam Football has made its emergence in sporting landscape of South East Asian countries through Bordoloi Trophy. Therefore, this tournament has assumed unique identity and everybody should try to regain its past glory.
Reminiscing his association with Bordoloi Trophy as its hard core fan, Chief Minister Sonowal said that during his childhood he used to stick to radio commentary to listen to the matches of Bordoloi Trophy. Such was the popularity of Bordoloi Trophy that front ranking teams like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting used to take part in the tournament. He also asked the organiser to schedule the tournament carefully taking into cognizance of other soccer tournaments so that more and more team can take part in Bordoloi Trophy.
Director General of Sports Authority of Assam Omkar Kedia, Director, Sports and Youth Welfare Department Dharma Kanta Mili, Director of SAI Subhash Basumatary, President of Gauhati Sports Association Munim Nobis and a host of dignitaries were present on the occasion.
