GUWAHATI: The Indian team is likely to make their base in Guwahati for their final preparation of the U-17 Women’s World Cup which will be hosted by India in November. Guwahati will organize the matches of Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ along with the inaugural game of the tournament.
The schedule of the tournament was announced yesterday by FIFA and Guwahati has been selected among the five venues of the competition. The city will altogether host six matches and a few of them would be involving India.
Addressing the media here today, Member Secretary of the SLAC Lakhya Konwar said: “It’s a proud moment for us that Guwahati is once again selected as one of the venues for the FIFA World Cup. Earlier, we had organized the U-17 Men's World Cup and FIFA was highly satisfied with our organizing skills. We feel it is the reason, Guwahati has been selected to host the U-17 Women’s FIFA World Cup matches.”
He also added: “India will play their group league matches in Guwahati and will likely make their base in the city before the start of the competition. “Host India will play their group matches in Guwahati and we are expecting that the Indian team will make their final preparation in Guwahati”, said Konwar.
The media briefing was also attended by the secretary of the Assam Football Association Hemen Brahma and Dharma Kanta Mili, Director, Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam.
Replying to a query, Brahma admitted that the Assam Football Association will take this opportunity to promote women soccer in the State. “Women football is gradually developing in the State and as the World Cup will be held in Guwahati, it is a good opportunity for us to improve the game further by utilizing this mega event and we will try our best to do it,” said Brahma.
Brahma also said: “Steps would be taken so that promising women footballers of the State can go into the stadium and watch matches during World Cup.”
