GUWAHATI: Assam made good start in the East Zone Junior Athletics Championship which got under way at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium here today.
Host altogether collected 243 points on the opening day and is placed top on the points table. Jharkhand (141points) and Bihar (70 points) are in second and third spot respectively.
Assam made good start this morning and athletes gave good number of medals in different events held throughout the day. Altogether 53 events were held on the first day of the meet and host collected 42 medals which included 14 gold 19 silver and 9 bronze respectively.
Earlier the inaugural function was attended by Onkar Kedia, DG of Sports Authority of Assam, as the chief guest. The other present in the function were Dharmakanta Mili, Director of the Sports and Youth Welfare, Lakhya Konwar, president of the Assam Athletics Association, Ritu Baran Sarma and Bishnu Ram Nunisa, vice president of the Assam Olympic Association, several former athletes and sports officials.
Altogether 353 athletes from nine states are taking part in this championship which will be concluded tomorrow.
