GUWAHATI: Assam started the new cricket season with a thumping 113 runs victory over Mizoram in the Vijay Hazare Cricket championship match held at Dehradun today. The highlight of the game was a brilliant unbeaten ton from Sarupam Purkayastha who remained not out on 163. Roshan Alam (4-45) too contributed well with the ball.
Invited to bat, Assam in Vijay Hazare Cricket championship piled up huge 324-3 in their 50 overs. Sarupam, who opened the innings, stood entire 50 overs on the wicket. During his marathon innings, the batsman also made two good partnerships with Gokul Sarma and Sibsankar Roy.
However, the start of day’s proceeding was not so attractive for Assam as opener Rahul Hazarika (9) and first down batsman Riyan Parag (1) returned into the pavilion with just 12 on the board. Sarupam and Gokul put first resistance with 159 runs partnership on the third wicket. Later Sarupam and Sibsankar added another 153 runs on the unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership. Both Gokul and Sibsankar scored half-centuries in the match.
Sarupam, who faced the first ball of the innings, altogether played 150 balls to score unbeaten 163 runs. There are 14 boundaries and four sixes in the innings. He took 69 balls to score first fifty and reached 100 facing 115th balls. Gokul hit five boundaries in his 82 balls innings, scored 57 while Sibsankar’s unbeaten 79 runs came from 53 balls and there are five boundaries and four over boundaries in his innings.
Later Assam restricted Mizoram to 211-6 in their 50 overs. Roshan Alam came out with the best figure, picked up 4-45. Abrar Kazi, the top scorer in Mizoram innings, contributed unbeaten 78 on the board.
