GUWAHATI: Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallabarua was elected unopposed as the new president of the Assam Athletics Association (AAA) during its Annual General Meeting held at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in the city today. Gitartha Goswami, Member Secretary of the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare, and Ritu Baran Sarmah were elected as the general secretary and treasurer of the association, respectively.
Nearly 70 members from different affiliated units of the Assam Athletics Association attended the meeting today, where discussion was held on various development programmes of the association. The meeting was also attended by former international athlete Tayabun Nessa.
13 members of the newly constituted executive committee were elected unopposed with a four-year term, and the election was left for two posts: General Secretary and Senior Joint Secretary. However, after the discussion, Lakhya Konwar (general secretary) and Bapan Kalita (Senior Joint Secretary) today decided not to contest, and the election procedure was completed with four votes for the sake of formality. Nipon Das was elected as the Senior Joint Secretary of the association Addressing the media after the meeting, Jayanta Mallabarua said that initially they would work to identify the talent at the grassroots level and provide them with quality training.
He added: The Assam Government is going to organise Khel Maharan in the state very soon, where athletes from rural areas will also take part. We shall try to spot the talent in this event.”
The newly elected secretary, Gitartha Goswami, emphasised the need to start competition at the school level. “We want to reintroduce competition at the school level. It will help us find talented athletes. Later, we will groom them so that in the future they can perform well in different national and international events.”
The new executive committee of the Assam Athletics Association is: President: Jayanta Mallabarua; Senior Vice President: Jayanta Basumaary; Vice President: Ashok Kumar Bharali, Karunadhar Dutta, and Manab Deka; General Secretary: Gitartha Goswami; Senior Joint Secretary: Nipon Das; Joint Secretary: Abdur Rahim Zibran and Samuel Daimary; Treasurer: Ritu Baran Sarmah; Executive Member: Anjan Goswami, Babul Khan, Dhrubajyoti Kalita, Nimendra Brahma, and Sudip Kumar Das.
