GUWAHATI: It was a proud moment for Assam's Upasha Talukdar when she bagged a bronze medal in the Girls’ U-17 rhythmic gymnastics all-around competition at Khelo India Games in Guwahati.
Talukdar taught herself gymnastics by watching videos online.
In an earlier interview with Hindustan Times, she had said that she learned her routines by watching videos of gymnasts from Ukraine and Russia.
“She has always been flexible, twisting and turning and dancing to music. The day I saw her scratching her ear with her toes because her hands were occupied with homework, I decided she was cut out for gymnastics,” father Nikunja Talukdar, who runs a small pharmacy in the city, told Hindustan Times.
Around 6,800 athletes are expected to participate in the third edition of the Khelo India Youth Games. The athletes will take part in a total of 20 sports with lawn ball and cycling being new additions to the Games.
