GUWAHATI: Guwahati and the other parts of the North East is likely to witness multiple sports events including a match between the legendary cricketers of yesteryears next year. The events would be held as a part of awareness campaign on road safety.

Shant Bharat Surakshit Bharat, a trust which is working closely with the Maharashtra state RTO department to create awareness towards road safety, is now trying to spread the word among the masses through popular sporting events in the country. Last year, the Trust organized a T20 cricket match with BCCI’s permission between the current Indian players to create awareness towards no honking and it was very well received by the cricket-loving people of the city.

The trust is now planning something similar with Guwahati and other parts of the region. Legendary figure like Sachin Tendulkar and Brain Lara likely to be the part of this campaign.

Talking to The Sentinel from Mumbai, chairman of the trust Ravi Gaikwad, who also happens to be the Chief of RTO, Thane (Konkan range) and one of the senior members in the Road Safety Cell of Maharashtra said sports is a language understood by all and the trust wants to create awareness towards road safety through sporting events in all corners of the country.

“With almost two lakh deaths annually caused by road accidents in the last three years, I am very surprised that people are not vocal about the issue. This is an extremely serious concern,” said Gaikwad, who was a HSc. topper in the state and a scientist with the TATA before he joined the RTO.

Throwing more light on the subject, Gaikwad, a former U-17 and U-19 cricketer who was in the Maharashtra Ranji Trophy camp said, “North-east is one area where the casualties caused by road accidents are alarmingly high and what better than to reach and educate the people in a language they can understand and relate to. There are few mega sports projects in the pipeline and I am sure the people of Assam and the entire North-east will support the initiative in a big way.”
