GUWAHATI: Medal winning performance of weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in Tokyo Olympics will motivate the young weightlifters of India, feels veteran sports organizer and Chef de Mission of Indian contingent Birendra Prasad Baishya. He also added: it was the historic moment for weightlifting in India.
Chanu gave first medal to India in the ongoing Olympics yesterday when she bagged a silver medal in the women's 49 kg category. It was the first occasion when an Indian women weightlifter collected a silver medal from the Olympics.
Reacting to Chanu's success Baishya told The Sentinel that he was very happy and delighted. "It's really a proud moment for India. I am very happy with her performance. It's a great beginning," said the veteran organizer.
It may be mentioned here that Baishya, who is also the president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, played a key role to bring the country's weightlifting on the track after the federation was suspended because of a doping scandal. He took a series of steps to clean the bad image of the federation.
Baishya was very much confident about Chanu's success in Tokyo even before the Games started. "She was in good shape and we were expecting a medal from her. Nice to see that Chanu has fulfilled our expectations," said Baishya.
He also added, "Chanu gave us a good beginning and I have full confidence that in the coming days our athletes will collect many more medals from this Games."
