GUWAHATI: A terrific knock from captain Riyan Parag went in vain as Assam lost their first game of the season in the Ranji Trophy against Chhattisgarh by 10 wickets at Raipur today. Assam bowled out 254 in the second innings and Chattisgarh scored 87-0 in their second innings on their way to winning the tie.
Riyan, who was unbeaten on 82 yesterday, didn’t take too much time to complete his hundred this morning. Riyan reached hundred in just 56 balls, and in this process, he also touched the record of Rajesh Borah, a former hard hitting batter, who holds the record for the fastest century by a cricketer from Assam in first-class cricket. Rajesh made the record against Tripura in the 1987–88 season when he scored 100 in 56 balls.
On the other hand, it is the fourth-fastest century in the history of India’s first-class cricket. Shakti Singh of Himachal Pradesh is at the top of the list, having taken just 45 balls to score a century. Second and third in the list are Rishav Pant (48 balls) and Yusuf Pathan (51 balls).
Meanwhile, although Riyan didn’t get too much support from the other end, he continued his attacking knock after the century and scored 155 before getting out. Assam captain took 87 balls to score those runs, and there were 11 boundaries and 12 over-boundaries in his innings. Opener Rahul Hazarika (39) was the second-highest scorer in the innings. Among the bowlers of Chhatisgarh Vasudev Bareth and J P butte collected three wickets each in the second innings.
In their next game Assam will face Kerala and the game will begin in Guwahati on January 12.
