GUWAHATI: Assam lost to Andhra by 172 runs in their third Rannji Trophy match of the season at Dibrugarh on Monday. Chasing 363 to win Assam were bowled out 190 in 48.2 overs in their second innings. It was the second defeat for Assam in this season.

Visitors took the driver's seat at the end of the third day’s play yesterday when they reduced Assam 81-5 in their second innings. Captain Riyan Parag was on the wicket, and he was the last hope for the team.

Riyan and another overnight not-out batter, Sumit, started the day’s play and nicely negotiated the bowlers in the morning. The duo took the score to 123 before Riyan lost his wicket, scoring 75. The batter faced 54 balls and hit five boundaries and the same number of over boundaries. Sumit, who made an 82-run partnership with Riyan, tried to continue the fight, and on the eighth wicket, he added another 64 runs with Akash Sengupta. However, once Akash (23) picked up by Golamaru, the Assam innings folded quickly. The home team lost the last three wickets, adding just three runs on the board.

Sumit, got out as the last batter on the team, scored 60 while playing 102 balls. There were six boundaries and one six in his innings. While Lalith Mohan bagged 4 wickets, Girinath Reddy and Golamaru collected three wickets each in the second innings. With this defeat, Assam moved to the bottom of the points table in Elite Group ‘B’ with one point from three outings. In their next game, Assam will face Bengal, and the match will begin in Guwahati on January 26.
