GUWAHATI: Hosts Tamil Nadu dominated day I in the sixth round of Ranji Trophy tie against Assam in Chennai on Tuesday. Electing to bat, Tamil Nadu were 386-4 at stumps. The first day witnessed four half century knocks and one of them later converted to century by opener N Jagadeesan. Pradosh Ranjan Paul also reached three figure scores as he remained not out on 99 at the end of the day's play.
Assam made a good start in the morning and picked up opener B Sai Sudharsan (2) when Tamil Nadu's total was just 5. B Aparajith (23), who came into bat at number three position, was the other batter who although started well but failed to take advantage of it.
The fall of wickets at the opposite end didn't disturb opener Jagadeesan and he started to repair the damage with B Indrajith. The duo on the third wicket added 157 runs before Indrajith lost his wicket after scoring a half century. Indrajith scored 77 with the help of eight boundaries.
Jagadeesan, playing 32nd first class match of his career, picked up his sixth century today. The wicketkeeper batter altogether faced 152 balls to score 125 with the help of 14 boundaries. Later Pradosh Ranjan Paul took the responsibility from him and guided the team to a good position when the day's play came to an end. Pradosh, on way to score unbeaten 99, faced 127 balls and hit 11 boundaries and the batter got good support from Vijay Shankar (53) who also remained not out on 53. The unbeaten partnership between Vijay and Pradosh already produced 150 runs on fifth-wicket.
Among the bowlers of Assam Siddharth Sarmah bagged two wickets. Mukhtar Hussain and Sunil Lachit shared the other two wickets between them.
