GUWAHATI: Earlier the boxer won several bouts in his life but this time he was unsuccessful. Shyamprasad Sarma, a boxer from Ledo, who admitted in a city nursing home after receiving an injury during the recently concluded All Assam Inter District Sub Junior and Youth Boxing Championship, lost his life here yesterday night. Assam Amateur Boxing Association had condoled the death of young boxer.
The All Assam Inter District Sub Junior and Youth Boxing Championships were held recently at the Sarujai Sports complex in the city. Shyamprasad represented Sivasagar in the meet in Youth category (Boys 46-49 weight group). On the first day of the meet (March 16) Shyamprasad, who received a punch in his head at the dying stage of his first round game, fell down after the bout and became senseless. The boxer was immediately taken to a local nursing home and later shifted to Apollo Hospital in the city where he breathed his last after nearly four-day long battle.
This is the first occasion in a local boxing competition where a boxer lost his life in such a tragic incident.
The secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association Hemanta Kalita, who is also the Secretary General of Boxing Federation of India, said, "It's really a tragic incident. We tried our best to save his life by providing best medical service but didn't success."
