GUWAHATI: Radha Gobinda Baruah Smriti Sangha organized a memorial meeting on Wednesday to pay tribute to three noted sports organizers-Rana Goswami, Ibocha Singh and Chaitanya Prasad Saikia- who died due to COVID-19 complications recently. The function was held at the RG Baruah Sports Complex.
Delivering a brief speech in the function veteran sports journalist Premadha Sarma said, "The trio were very gentle in nature and were very dedicated persons. Their deaths are a very big loss for us."
It may be mentioned here that Rana Goswami and Ibocha Singh served the Gauhati Sports Association for several decades while Chaitanya Saikia, who was a former volleyball player, associated with the Assam Volleyball Association.
Several other sports organizers including president of Gauhati Sports Association Munin Nobis, President of Assam Kho Kho Association Rajiv Prakash Baruah, former cricketer Pranab Sarma and sports organizer L Hemanta Singh too spoke a few words in the meeting. Nobis, who was very close to all three sports organizers, said, "It was in the tenure of Rana Goswami when big sponsors started to come forward to sponsor the Bordoloi Trophy. On the other hand Ibocha Singh was a person with high technical knowledge. Chaitany Saikia got the opportunity to serve the Assam Volleyball Association for a brief period but within that time he tried to bring a noticeable change in the association. All were very great organizers and we will miss them very much."
Among others present in the function were president and secretary of the Radha Gobinda Baruah Smriti Sangha Zahirul Haq and Amal Narayan Patowary respectively, two vice presidents of Assam Olympic Association Anup Choudhury and Raj Kakoti, family members of the trio and several others.
