SHILLONG: Meghalayan mid-fielder Phrangki Buam has moved from the Shillong Lajong to Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa, the club announced on Friday (September 18). The 19-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year contract with the Goan side.
After the transfer, the Meghalaya midfielder expressed that he is "happy and excited" to join the Gaurs and is looking forward to a season with the side. He added that the Goan side's mentality to "always attack" is what drew him towards them.
The teenager first rose to prominence after participating in the 2018-19 season of the I-League. In his debut season, he found the back of net 6 times and emerged as the third-highest Indian goal scorer in the league.
Buam, who hails from the Jaintia hills, started his career with Royal Wahingdoh, where he appeared for their U-16 and U-18 sides. His subsequent move to the Shillong Lajong proved fruitful for the side as it wound up winning the U-18 youth league in 2018.
He also won plaudits for his performance in the I-League. Even though his side was relegated, Baum's ability to play across the front line caught the public's eye.
Buam went on to help Shillong win both the Shillong Premier League and Meghalaya State League where he was the top scorer for the side.
Later during the season, he had moved out on loan to Bengaluru United to play in the 2nd Division League and gain more exposure.
"Phrangki is a player who has immense potential and was one of the shining lights in a very talented bunch of players who emerged from the Lajong Academy," Ravi Puskur, FC Goa''s Director of Football, reacting to the transfer, said.
"He's a player with an eye for goal and has the technical capability to fit well into the style of football that''s become a hallmark of our club. We''re hopeful that with time, Phrangki will become a regular feature in the first team," he added.
