NEW DELHI: In the latest women's singles BWF World rankings released on Tuesday, PV Sindhu, the celebrated Indian shuttler and two-time Olympic medalist, encountered a setback as she slipped three places to the 15th position. Her current standing, with 51,070 points earned from 13 tournaments, indicates a challenging season for the 27-year-old badminton star.
Sindhu's struggles this season have been attributed to her return from a five-month injury layoff, resulting from a stress fracture in her ankle during the journey to Commonwealth Games gold in August of the previous year. While she aims to regain her form, her performances have been inconsistent, with early exits in several events at the beginning of the year. Nonetheless, she managed to secure a final finish at the Madrid Spain Masters Super 300 and a semifinal spot at the Malaysia Masters Super 500, providing glimpses of her competitive spirit.
PV Sindhu's illustrious badminton career has established her as India's most decorated player. Her remarkable achievements include winning the inaugural BWF World Tour Finals in 2018 and clinching silver medals at prestigious tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and BWF World Championships in the same year. A pivotal moment in Indian sports history occurred in 2019 when Sindhu became the country's first badminton world champion by triumphing over Nozomi Okuhara in the final. She continued to make history by securing a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, making her the first Indian woman and second Indian athlete, after Sushil Kumar, to achieve the remarkable feat of winning two individual Olympic medals.
As Sindhu prepares to participate in the Canada Open Super 500, her fans and the entire badminton community eagerly anticipate her resurgence. With her determination and skill, she remains a force to be reckoned with in international badminton.
India's badminton scene also boasts impressive talent in the men's category. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked third in the world, shine as the country's top-ranked men's doubles players. In men's singles, HS Prannoy leads the Indian charge, standing strong at the eighth spot, while Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth hold respectable rankings of 19th and 20th, respectively.
In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, despite slipping one spot, continue to be ranked 17th globally. Meanwhile, in the men's doubles category, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila are placed at 26th, while Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy are positioned at 33rd in the latest BWF rankings.
As Indian badminton enthusiasts eagerly track the performance of their beloved players, the hopes and support for PV Sindhu's resurgence stand at the forefront. With her determination and unwavering spirit, she remains an inspiration for aspiring athletes and an invaluable asset to the sport of badminton in India and across the globe.
