MELBOURNE: One of the greatest Indian sportspersons, Sania Mirza ended her journey in the Grand Slams on Friday. She ends her illustrious journey with the covert tournament of tennis at the very location, where she started it several years back. The announcement regarding this end of her career with Grand Slams at the Australian Open 2023 was made long back.
The last match in the Grand Slam for Sania Mirza was the final of the Australian Open in the Mixed Doubles category. Her partner in the match was Rohan Bopanna. The Indian pair lost the finals to the Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos. They managed to win their maiden title in the Australian Open in 7-6, 6-2 sets.
She started to speak about her journey with the sport after congratulating her opponents and applauding their win. And she was hardly able to contain her treats as she recollected her memories in the court. Sania Mirza took the decision to play the last Grand Slam tournament in the same country where she had played her first.
"My professional career started in Melbourne. I couldn't think of a better arena to finish my [Grand Slam] career at," tweeted Sania Mirza and added, "Rod Laver Arena has been special. Never thought I'd be able to play in a Grand Slam final, in front of my son."
Although she has bid her farewell to the Grand Slam tournament, she still plans to continue with a few more events before announcing the final curtain calls for her illustrious career. She has plans to play at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai next month.
This was the 11th time that the player had appeared in the Grand Slam. She has 43 doubles titles including six Grand Slams to her name. She was also able to maintain the WTA No 1 player for a duration of 91 weeks in the Women's Doubles Category.
