NEW DELHI: In what could be called a heartbreaking moment for India,
the Indian men's hockey team has lost to Belgium in the semi-final of the
ongoing Tokyo Olympics today.
In this sensational and high voltage match, the Indian men in blue were defeated by the Belgium team with a margin of 2-5.
The speeding match during its first half witnessed the Indian team scoring 2-1 and was quite enthusiastic over the lead as the Indian team dominated the turf keeping the Belgians at bay. India's Hardic and Mandeep scored the goals for the Indian team and vehemently led the team's morale and everybody thought of an undoubted victory due to this lead.
However, things did not turn out as expected in the second half as a team, Belgium buckled up on the turf and gave a tough fightback in order to be back in the game. The Belgium contingent was able to break the ice and get hold of an equalizer as it managed to make a major breakthrough and brought the difference to a draw by virtue of a penalty shot that they capitalized on.
It may be mentioned that the third half ended with zero goals while the fourth half was a major disappointment for the Indian team as it brought utter dismay to the men in blue as the rival team Belgium scored four goals against it effectively using the penalty shots and miraculously made It's entry into the winning streak. Belgium's Hendricks took a hat-trick in the match that savored victory of his team over team India.
Interestingly, now the Indian team would play for the 3rd position in the games and if they triumph, they would bring another bronze and would eventually come back to India. It can be added that the Indian hockey team entered Olympics after four decades.
