NEW DELHI: In a disappointing turn of events, renowned American tennis star Venus Williams has made the tough decision to withdraw from the WTA Cleveland tournament due to a persistent knee injury. This unforeseen setback means she will miss the final preparatory event before the highly anticipated US Open. Williams, a remarkable seven-time Grand Slam champion, expressed her frustration with the current state of her knee, which has prevented her from performing optimally on the court.

In a video message released by the tournament's promoters, Williams spoke candidly about her situation. "Unfortunately, my knee is just not cooperating as it should. It's not providing the support I need to compete effectively. It's truly disheartening, but I'm committed to working on myself and regaining my strength to make my presence felt at the U.S. Open this year. Moreover, I'm hopeful to make a comeback to Cleveland's courts next year," she stated with determination.

This determination signifies Williams' desire to continue being a part of the WTA circuit in the coming year. Her recent participation in the Cincinnati Masters saw her progress to the round of 32 before being defeated by Qinwen Zheng, following a victorious match against Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 64.

Originally slated to face Mirra Andreeva in the first round at Cleveland, Williams' absence has paved the way for Germany's Tamara Korpatsch to step in. Williams had secured a wildcard entry for both the Cleveland tournament and the upcoming US Open, set to commence on August 28. Her focus now shifts towards regaining fitness for what will be her remarkable 17th appearance at Flushing Meadows.

Venus Williams' illustrious career boasts an impressive tally of seven single Grand Slam titles. Notably, she clinched her home Slam victory at the US Open in 2000 and 2001. Additionally, she secured five Wimbledon titles, the last of which was achieved in 2008.

As Williams strives to overcome this temporary setback, her unwavering dedication to her sport shines through. Her resolve to recover in time for the US Open, along with her expressed intention to return to Cleveland's courts next year, highlights her enduring commitment to tennis and her fans around the world.
