Viswanathan Anand inaugurates Assam School Teachers Chess

GUWAHATI: Five-time World Chess Champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand inaugurated the 1st edition of Assam School Teachers Online Chess Fest 2020 through video conference on Sunday. The inaugural function was also attended by B Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary, Elementary & Secondary Education Department.

Speaking on the occasion, Anand appreciated the effort of the government of Assam and Assam Chess Club for taking up this unique idea of promoting chess in the schools of Assam and giving an opportunity to the teachers to learn and play the game. He added: 'Introducing chess to the teachers first is a novel idea as these teachers will later play a vital role in educating the students on the various aspects of the game.' Anand also expressed his desire to support the Government of Assam to introduce the game of chess in the state of Assam.

The competition is organized by the Samagra Shiksha Assam in association with Assam Chess Club.
