PARIS: World No 2 Rafael Nadal was conferred with a massive state honour from the city of Madrid on Thursday.

The Community of Madrid awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Second of May to the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

He received the honour from Diaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid.

'Very grateful to the Community of Madrid, its President and the Council of Government for the honor received from them and all Madrid with the imposition of the GREAT CROSS OF THE ORDER OF TWO MAYO @ Real Casa De Posto', Nadal posted on his Facebook page.

It was a noteworthy year for the Spaniard who won his 13th French Open title in September and claim 20 Grand Slams to level with his greatest competitor Roger Federer who has as many majors.

Apart from those major wins, Nadal broke Jimmy Connors's long-standing record for most consecutive weeks spent in the top 10 of the world rankings and also claimed his 1000th career match win on tour. Agencies
