New Delhi: India's ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has broken his own record and set a new national record as he threw 89.30 metres at the Paavo Nurmi Games held in Finland.
Chopra's previous national record happened to be 88.07 m which he had set in Patiala in March last year.
He won the silver medal with his throw at the event and it is interesting to note that this tournament happened to be his first competitive outing since he won the historic gold medal at the Tokyo Games.
Notably, he had clinched the gold medal in Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.58m on August 7, 2021, thereby becoming the first Indian to have secured a gold medal for India during the previous edition of the Summer Olympic Games held in 2021.
Neeraj also happens to be the first Indian to have bagged an Olympic Gold medal in athletics and is only the second individual gold medalist at the Olympics.
Oliver Helander of Finland clinched the gold medal at the event with a throw of 89.83 metres.
It is worth mentioning that Neeraj made an impeccable comeback in the competitive circuit and his much-awaited return was nothing short of extraordinary.
Neeraj, who returned to the arena after just over 10 months, was very close to touching the coveted 90m mark, which is considered to be the gold standard in the world of javelin throw.
He opened his account with an impressive 86.92m before sending the spear to 89.30m. His next three attempts were fouls while he came up with 85.85m in his sixth and final throw.
