GUWAHATI: In a dazzling display of cricketing brilliance, Riyan Parag, the dynamic captain of the Assam cricket team, kicked off the 2023-24 domestic season with a spectacular 56-ball century against Chhattisgarh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy clash in Raipur. Parag's scintillating innings, comprising 11 fours and 12 sixes, marked the fourth-fastest century by an Indian in first-class cricket.
Leading from the front, Parag's remarkable knock totaled 155 runs off just 87 balls, boasting an impressive strike rate of 178.16. Not only did he secure the title of the fastest century by an Assamese batsman in first-class cricket, surpassing Syed Fayyazuddin's previous record of 62 balls, but he also etched his name among the fastest centuries in the history of Indian first-class cricket.
However, despite Parag's stellar performance, Assam faced disappointment in their opening-round encounter against Chhattisgarh, succumbing to a 10-wicket defeat. In their first innings, Assam could only muster 159 runs, with the captain contributing a modest eight runs.
Undeterred by the setback, Chhattisgarh enforced the follow-on, setting the stage for Parag to once again showcase his batting prowess. In the second innings, he shattered records by achieving another century. Despite his heroics, only three other Assam batters reached double-digit scores, leading to a total of 254 runs and an 86-run lead.
Chhattisgarh effortlessly chased down the target, securing victory without much resistance. While the team faced a disappointing outcome, Riyan Parag's extraordinary performance serves as a significant confidence boost for the 22-year-old aspiring cricketer. Having previously represented India A, Parag is widely recognized as one of the most promising young talents in the country, aiming to solidify his position in the Indian cricket team.
In the crucible of competitive cricket, Riyan Parag's explosive start to the season not only leaves cricket enthusiasts in awe but also underscores his potential to make a lasting impact on the national stage.
