NEW DELHI: Mandar Tamhane has been named CEO of NorthEast United Football Club who is a crucial figure in Indian football and was the CEO of Bengaluru FC for the past ten years since its creation, where Tamhane oversaw the club's transition from the I-League to the Hero ISL, the growth of the youth system and several titles and honors on and off the field.

Taking on Twitter, NorthEast United FC wrote, “NorthEast United FC is excited to announce that Mandar Tamhane has been appointed as the Club's CEO.

Join us in welcoming him Highlanders!”

On 13th January 2023, Mandar Tamhane stepped down from his position as CEO of Bengaluru FC. In an official statement, Bengaluru FC club owner and director Parth Jindal said,” I’d like to thank Mandar for his immense contribution to Bengaluru Football Club over the years. From playing his part in the seven trophies we’ve won over ten seasons, to scouting and bringing players to the club who have then gone on to represent the country, Mandar’s efforts at Bengaluru FC cannot be quantified.”

On the other hand, NorthEast United FC owner John Abraham in a press release stated that “In our conversations with Mandar leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for the Club. From instituting a strong academy structure to honor the talent in the Northeast to bringing an attacking, sustainable style of play under strong leadership to the first team, in order to compete at the highest level. I am renewed by his drive and determination to achieve these goals we are undertaking and more.”

Expressing his excitement Mr. Tamhane also said, “I am thrilled to join NorthEast United FC in this key leadership position and be instrumental in cultivating and executing its vision for long-term growth and success. The Northeast is a hotbed for Indian football talent and the following for football in the region is tremendous. I am committed to helping build a viable foundation of systems and structure to the first team and academy, which is resonant with the fans’ passion in the region and one that they would be proud of."

The Guwahati-based football club was established on April 23, 2014, and participates mostly in Indian top-notch football matches in the country. NorthEast United FC also signed a partnership with India's premier fantasy sports platform, Dream11.

In 2017, while meeting the then Chief Minister of Assam, NorthEast United FC owner John Abraham expressed his desire to set up a Football Academy in Guwahati and seeks support from the state government.
