APSC Cash-For-Job Scam: Assam Police Begins Probe; Three Under Scanner

GUWAHATI: More trouble awaits three of the main accused in the APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) cash-for-job scam with the Assam Police gearing up to carry out detailed probes into their disproportionate assets.

These are former APSC members Samedur Rahman and Basanta Doley as well as Naba Kanta Patir, an engineer from Dibrugarh. The last of the trio was the first to be arrested for taking bribe from a woman candidate way back in 2016. In fact, this arrest revealed the trail for the subsequent exposures in the cash-for-job deals.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police has already recommended investigations in this regard. Sources informed that two officers of Assam Police have commenced the preliminary inquiries. They would be looking into the bank account details, property and other assets of the three accused persons. After completion of the preliminary probe, they will submit a report to the State government.

If after going through the submitted report, the State government accords the permission, then a separate case will be registered against the three accused persons. This will be followed by a regular inquiry into the disproportionate assets of the accused trio. Except Patir who is now on bail, the other two accused persons are currently in judicial custody in Guwahati Central Jail.

Mentionably the CBI has already instituted a detailed investigation into the disproportionate assets of the then APSC chairman Rakesh Paul, who too is in judicial custody in the Guwahati Central Jail.

A total of 70 persons have been arrested in the APSC cash-for-job scam. Another four are still absconding.
