Lack of coordination among NE Police worsens the situation

GUWAHATI: It’s strange but true: Assam is next to Delhi when it comes to kidnapping cases across the nation.
According to an NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) report, 22,949 kidnapping cases were registered in the State from 2016 to 2018. The crime rate in the State during the period was 26.3 — the second-highest in the nation — after Delhi. During that period, the national capital had a crime rate of 31.
While 12,294 of the 14,084 kidnapping victims in Assam during 2018 were males, 1,790 were females. On the other hand, 1,109 more kidnapping cases were reported in the State in 2018 as compared to 2017.
The NCRB further states that 6,126 kidnapping cases were registered in the State in 2016, 7,857 in 2017, and 8,966 cases in 2019.
According to Assam Police sources, lack of coordination among the police forces in the neighbouring States has led to such a high rate of kidnapping cases in the State. In maximum cases, victims are transported to the neighbouring States, sources said.
Currently, the Assam police is getting support from some private NGOs who are helping them in tracing out the victims.
