JORHAT: Tata Tea Estate doctor Dr. Deben Dutta, who hails from Teok Jagduar, succumbed to his injuries at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Saturday evening. He sustained injury after being allegedly assaulted by tea garden labourers following the death of a patient, Sukra Majhi (32), who was a labourer in Teok Tea Estate owned by the Tata Tea Plantation.

Sukra Majhi was a resident from No 12 Line of the garden. He was first taken to Teok FRU and then brought to the garden hospital where he died at 3.30 pm on Saturday. Following his death, labourers and locals claimed that Majhi died due to negligence of the doctor on duty, Dr. Deben Dutta. They allegedly vandalized his residence and assaulted him.

Dr Dutta was brought to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital in the evening where he was declared brought death.

Meanwhile, the Assam Valley CCPA has condemned in the strongest possible terms “the mindless and murderous assault perpetrated on the Medical Officer of Teok Tea Estate while he was on duty in the Estate Hospital resulting in his expiry while being taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment of the grevious injuries sustained by him due to the assault.” The Assam Valley CCPA has further called upon the authorities concerned to immediately apprehend the culprits responsible for the assault and demanded strict action against them.
