GUWAHATI: Pitambor Deva Goswami, Xatradhikar of Aauniati Xatra on Thursday said the people of Assam have rejected the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) as it cannot safeguard ‘Jati Mati Bheti’ and culture of the indigenous people of the State.

Goswami told The Sentinel that the CAB is against the sentiment and views of the people of the Northeast, particularly Assam. He said the need of the hour is to carry out a democratic movement with right thinking and right strategies.

“We have every right to agitate against the CAB. But voices of dissent and anger must not be converted into violence. In the name of agitation public property cannot be damaged,” Goswami said.

Goswami appealed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to stand with the people of Assam at this juncture and respect their views, sentiments and resentment against the CAB. “Sonowal often says he will not do anything that hurts the people of Assam. The people are hurt now. So, he should not do anything further to hurt them,” Goswami said.
