GUWAHATI: State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who was also present at the press conference along with the Chief Secretary, said police personnel, going against their will, had to be tough in enforcing the 21-day lockdown since midnight on Tuesday. He added, “This lockdown under the Disaster Management Act, first of its kind so far I remember, has provisions for stringent punishment, including one-year non-bailable jail. Anyone giving misleading information in the social media will have to face stringent punishment under this Act.”
The DGP further said, “We request all to remain indoors. Those engaged in essential services should have identity cards with them. We request all controlling authorities to issue identity cards.”
On people plying vehicles, the DGP said, “Nobody should go for the marketing of essential commodities with cars and other vehicles. They can only go to local grocery shops on foot. Assembly of four or more will invite stringent action. This being a critical time needs tough measures. We request some people seen loitering on the roads to remain indoors.”
