Exempt Assam from CAA ambit, Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma urges Delhi

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday urged the Centre to exempt Assam from the purview of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He also stated that the Union government must initiate measures for protection of the indigenous people of the Northeast.

“We are thankful that the Government of India has exempted States like Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and to a large extent Meghalaya from the ambit of the Citizenship Amendment Act; but we demand that full exemption be accorded to Meghalaya, including measures taken for exemption of Assam as well,” the Chief Minister said at the 15th Annual General Conference of the Council of Nokmas (Village Chiefs) at Jengjal in West Garo Hills.

Informing that Meghalaya Assembly has passed a resolution for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State, the Chief Minister said, “We are very firm in our demand and would continue to engage with the Central government unless and until complete exemption from CAA and protection are provided to our people.”

He added that though most of the north-eastern States have been provided measures for protection yet the State of Assam is facing challenges under the CAA. Chief Minister Conrad has demanded similar measures for protection and exemption of the people of Assam as well.
