Five Held for ONGCL Oil Pilferage Case in Jorhat

JORHAT: Five persons have been picked for alleged involvement in the ONGCL crude oil pilferage case from Dangdhora area under Titabor subdivision in Jorhat district on Sunday night. They were allegedly involved in siphoning of crude oil after drilling the ONGCL pipeline between Borhulla to Sivasagar, said police sources.

Moreover, the oil pilferage gang managed a section of ONGCL officials and police as well as media, which helped the gang to siphon off crude oil passing through the district from the gas gathering station Borhulla to NPT-Geleki in Sivasagar district for many years. The ONCGL crude oil pilferage case came to light after a gap of 10 years, which was the third of its kind in the State. The 25 Assam Police Battalion was successful in spotting and identifying the crude oil pilferage racket.

The first investigation was followed by an FIR lodged by ONGCL-Assam and Assam Arakan Basin Headquarter at Cinnamora at the Titabor Police Station. A total of seven persons were picked up and produced before the Subdivisional Judicial Court, Titabor and have been remanded to four days’ police custody, said police sources.

Police further said that the pipeline, measuring four metre in diameter, passes through Borhulla via Titabor-Amguri to Sivasagar. A gang of 15 youths between the age group of 25 years to 40 years was siphoning off several hundred metric tons of crude oil.

The arrested persons are Nakul Gogoi, Bikash Bora, Basanta Orang, Dhoni Saikia, and Bipul Bordoloi. An investigation is on and police are trying to trace the mastermind of this racket. All the five were picked from their houses within the area of Dangdhora and Chekuria Gaon under Madhopur Outpost.
