Judicial Commission To Probe APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) Scam

GUWAHATI: As per directive of the Gauhati High Court, the Assam Government has formed a one-man commission headed by retired Gauhati High Court judge Justice BK Sarma to inquire into anomalies and malpractices in the conduct of civil service preliminary and main examinations by the APSC (Assam Public Service Commission), the results of which were declared on May 12, 2015. The inquiry commission will also suggest measures to be taken to eliminate such malpractices in future.

On June 14, 2019, the High Court asked the Assam Government to form a judicial commission within a month to inquire into the anomalies in the cash-for-job scam in the APSC. The inquiry commission has to submit its report along with suggestions to the government within six months.

The police have already arrested 59 ACS and APS officers and filed charge-sheets against them in the cash-for-job scam. And most of the accused in the case are on bail now. A number of the main accused in the case are still absconding.

In the recent past, a former BJP MP alleged that as many as five kin of a present BJP MLA had got jobs though the APSC, but they were not even interrogated by the investigators. The police, according to former MP, however arrested the daughter of former BJP MP RP Sharma in the scam.

After such an outburst from the former MP, a section has questioned the fairness of investigation into the scam. A number of others feel that because of lacunae on the part of the police investigators as many as 43 of the accused could get bail. Taking all such views into account, Dispur felt it wise to form the judicial commission as directed by the High Court.
