Militancy Wanes for Courage of Police: Minister G Kishan Reddy

GUWAHATI: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy on Monday lauded the Assam Police for displaying great professional qualities, courage and valour by fighting against insurgency and militancy for several decades.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day organized by Assam Police here on Monday, Reddy said that sacrifices and dedication of the force has brought about a sea change in the State’s law-and-order situation giving a fillip to investment opportunities.

“Assam Police personnel have sacrificed their lives in battle against militants and insurgents, maintenance of law and order, tackling crime, ensuring security in the border areas apart from helping the needy in times of floods and other natural disasters,” Reddy said.

He added that 879 Assam Police personnel have laid down their lives for maintenance of law and order in the State since 1964.

The Home Minister said the entire State is carrying forward the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ‘Act East Policy’ both in words and spirit. He attributed courage, sincerity and devotion to duty as hallmarks of Assam Police.

He also said that the entire country salutes our police forces, their families and remembers with pride those brave police personnel martyred in the line of duty on the ‘Police Commemoration Day’.

Asserting that India will continue with its policy of zero-tolerance against terrorism, Reddy stated that the Indian forces have been capable of thwarting all threats to country’s internal security and there have been a reduction in casualties of Police personnel and civilians.

During Monday’s function, officials of the Assam Police Headquarters read out the names of the police officers and personnel who lost their lives in harness from September 1, 2018, to August 31, 2019.

Besides Reddy, among those who laid wreaths at the Memorial Column were DGP Kuladhar Saikia and senior-most officers of each rank to constables present at the Smriti Parade. Three volleys of fire were also given in honour of the martyrs.
