GUWAHATI: Even though just one day is left for publication of the final NRC (National Register of Citizens) on August 31, the Assam government is confused as to when it would receive the detailed data on NRC from the State NRC Coordinator. The Supreme Court had earlier stated that the detailed NRC data could be made available to the State government, Central government, and the Registrar General of India only after the entire data is made secure like the Aadhaar data. However, no time frame was given for the same.
On August 13, the two-judge Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman stated, “Insofar as the prayer of the learned State Coordinator with regard to maintenance of security of the NRC data is concerned, we direct that an appropriate regime be enacted on lines similar to the security regime provided for AADHAAR data. Only thereafter, the list of inclusions and exclusions shall be made available to the State Government, Central Government and Registrar General of India. We further direct that only hard-copies of the supplementary list of inclusions be published at the NRC Seva Centers, Circle Offices and Offices of the District Magistrates of the State. We also direct that the list of exclusions to be published on 31st August, 2019 shall be published only on on-line and shall be family-wise.”
Speaking to The Sentinel, a senior official of the State Home and Political Department said, “The State government needs the detailed data at the earliest. This is because the people not figuring in the final NRC will get 120 days to appeal to the Foreigners Tribunals. But we’re in the dark as to when the State Coordinator will make the data available to the State government.”
