Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah separately on Thursday on various issues concerning the State. Both Modi and Shah assured Sonowal of keeping the interests and aspirations of Assam in mind while signing any peace accord with the NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagaland).

Other issues that figured at the meetings were: Revival of the Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) mills in Assam, keeping the present status of NRL (Numaligarh Refinery) intact, etc.

The meeting between Shah and Sonowal assumes significance as Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and an all-party delegation from Manipur met Shah and registered their concern over the Naga peace accord.

Both Assam and Manipur have been opposing inclusion of any Naga-inhabited areas of their States into the proposed ‘greater Nagalim’ being demanded by the NSCN-IM.

Later Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla met Sonowal and briefed him on the developments of talks with the NSCN-IM and the ULFA.
