GUWAHATI: The Government of Assam has directed the Assam Police to prepare a ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP) on the security system that should be put in place during the visits of State Governor and the State Chief Minister and other VVIPs at New Delhi. The Political (A) Department has directed the Additional Director General of Police (Security), Assam, to submit the SOP within two weeks to the Government for approval. Sources informed that no such standard operating procedure has been in place previously.
This move has been taken following the reported security lapse during the visit of Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi to New Delhi on August 25. Following the reported lapse in security, the Governor’s office informed the State government of his “displeasure on the duties performed by the security personnel attached to him” during that visit.
Stating that “the Government has taken a serious view on the matter of laxity of security personnel on duty”, the State Political (A) Department has already requested the DGP, Assam, “to submit within two weeks a detailed inquiry report fixing responsibility on the erring officials.”
Adding that “to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future” and “there is a need of review of the security system”, the State Additional DGP (Security) has been asked to prepare the SOP.
