NEW MEDICAL COLLEGE

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has transferred several senior doctors and posted them at the newly set up Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute, Diphu.
The development has come ahead of the next month’s scheduled visit of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to Assam Hills Medical College. During this visit, the MCI will assess the status of infrastructures, facilities and faculties at the new medical college. Once the MCI is satisfied with infrastructures and faculties, it will allow the Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute, Diphu to start its academic functioning.
Incidentally, the Union Health Ministry had rejected the proposal for a new government medical college at Diphu on the basis of recommendations from the MCI last year. The MCI is the apex regulatory body for medical education that assesses whether the medical colleges across the country have the required infrastructure, faculties and number of patients.
“In 2018, the MCI found that the proposed medical college in Diphu did not have adequate infrastructures and faculties. Under such circumstances, the Medical Council of India did not allow the medical college to start its academic functioning,” a source said.
The State Health department has made all arrangements including ensuring adequate faculties at the Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute, Diphu to fulfill the criteria set by the MCI team.
