GUWAHATI: The protest against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) has changed its mode from shouting slogans to brushstrokes and strokes of the pen (composing poems) at the Latasil playground here.

Veteran artistes and poets assembled here on Wednesday and registered their protest against the Act in their creative best – both on paper and canvas. If noted sculptor Biren Singha made an earthen statue of martyr Dipanjal Das on the field, prominent artiste Pulok Gogoi protested the Act with the strokes of his brush on a canvas. A painter, on the other hand, painted a picture with a slogan written on it. Former Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Amarjyoti Choudhury, Dr Nilima Thakuria Haque, Dr. Chayanika Sarma, Pankaj Govindha Medhi, GU professor Bhaskarjyoti Bora and others recited poems, all targeting the CAA.

Speaking at the rally, AASU adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The people of the State opposed the CAA in a unique way – through brushstrokes and pen strokes, besides shouting full-throttle. Every brush stroke of the artistes gets across a strong message against the CAA, so does the stroke of a pen. After the Christmas prayers, all artistes and poets got into a huddle at this field to protest the CAA in a different way.”

Bhattacharya further said, “The SAKP (Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad) is going to observe this December 31 as a black day with black badges pinned on their lapels while working on offices.”

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “Now the social media war is to start. No one should follow Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s accounts and pages. Such a move will cut them down to size. Today’s protests were never seen in India. Such protests were seen only in Europe.”

Veteran theatre personality Ratna Ojha said, “Paying homage to the martyrs, I keep my hope alive that we’ll be the winner in our war against the CAA.”
