GUWAHATI: The Assam Police will come down heavily on those taking laws into their hands post final NRC publication even as DGP Kuladhar Saikia expressed optimism that the situation will remain peaceful.

Addressing a press conference at the Assam Police Headquarters here on Friday evening, Saikia said all arrangements have been made to prevent anti-social elements and other vested interest groups to create a law-and-order situation in the State after the publication of the final NRC on August 31. He said deputy commissioners and superintendents of police have already acted on strategies worked out earlier to ensure a peaceful situation across during post final NRC publication period.

On August 23, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal convened a meeting DCs and SPs to draw strategies to ensure unity and peace among all sections of people during the post-final NRC publication.

Saikia said the police have already conducted surveys and assessed the vulnerability of different districts, sub-divisions, and urban and rural areas. Refusing to divulge the number and names of vulnerable districts, the DGP asserted that the State has adequate forces to tackle any untoward and law-and-order situation.

He said the police have reactivated Nagarik Samitis (citizens’ committees) to ensure peace.

Kuladhar Saikia said the police will closely monitor social media to prevent posting of communal and politically sensitive comments. He said those trying to use social media to spread a rumour, hate speech and communal comments will not be spared.
