GUWAHATI: Providing 100 days work a year under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) has been maintaining a steady rise since fiscal 2017-18. The highest number of job households were given 100 days jobs in the financial year that ended on March 31, 2021.

According to government statistics, 71,811 cardholders were given 100 days jobs in fiscal 2020-21 as against 29,979 in fiscal 2019-20. Likewise, in fiscal 2018-19, only 18,360 cardholders were given 100 days jobs as against 10,928 in fiscal 2017-18.

Rural assets and jobs are generated under the MGNREGA, and providing 100 days works to cardholders is one of the prime objectives of this scheme.

As many as 71,83,703 man days were generated in the State in fiscal 2020-21 under this scheme.

Lakhimpur district topped the list by providing 100 days works to 10,755 cardholders in fiscal 2020-21. Other districts that performed well on this front in fiscal 2020-21 are – 6,661 in Nalabri; 6,392 in Barpeta; 5,268 in Nagaon; 5,036 in Kamrup; 4,442 in Dhubri; 4,232 in Darrang and 4,020 in Karimganj.

The MGNREGA has been a scheme that was chosen for thrust during the UPA and the NDA tenures at the Centre and in the State. The government at Dispur that's going to be formed after May 2, 2021 is also expected to lay stress on this scheme.
